E-Mini S&P 500

Stocks rose on Thursday, making back some of the steep losses in the previous session, as retail giant Walmart's earnings and strong retail sales figures led investors to believe the U.S. consumer could help the country avoid  a recession.

The S&P 500 was up 0.25%, or 7 points to 2847.60. At best, earnings across the companies in the S&P 500 will grow 1.5% this year, FactSet projects, far short of estimates for growth of more than 6% that analysts initially forecast in January. Worse, a few analysts predict earnings could end up contracting for 2019 as a whole.
