Wall Street was set to open higher on Thursday as better-than-expected trade data from China and a steadying of its currency offered some comfort to investors rattled by an escalation in trade tensions and signals pointing to a recession.

At 8:40 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were up 80 points, or 0.31%.

E-Mini S&P 500

The S&P 500 registered its largest one-day percentage gain in about two months on Thursday, with technology shares providing the biggest boost as equities continued to rebound along with bond yields.


All major sectors advanced at least 1%, and the S&P 500 technology index, which was at the heart of the recent sell-off, climbed 2.4%. The benchmark S&P 500 extended a rebound that began on Wednesday and closed near its high of the day. The index gained 4% from Wednesday’s intraday bottom to Thursday’s close.

At 8:40 a.m. ET, S&P 500 e-minis were up 10.5 points, or 0.36%.

E-Mini Nasdaq
Shares of Symantec Corp and Advanced Micro Devices Inc bolstered futures for Nasdaq 100. Symantec jumped 11% after sources said chipmaker Broadcom Inc was in advanced talks to buy the cybersecurity company’s enterprise business. 
AMD gained 6% after the chipmaker released the second generation of its processor chip for data centers and said that it had landed Alphabet Inc’s Google and Twitter Inc as customers. 
Lyft Inc advanced 7.7% after the ride hailing service raised its outlook for the year and forecast a faster path to profitability. Rival Uber Technologies Inc, due to report quarterly results after the bell, rose 4.8%.

At 8:40 a.m. ET, Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 39.25 points, or 0.52%.

HSI/HSI warrant

Hong Kong stocks climbed on Thursday, tracking broader Asia, as China reported surprisingly strong trade numbers and capped the yuan’s fall, offering a brief respite from fears of a global currency war.

The Hang Seng index rose 0.5%, to 26,120.77, while the China Enterprises index also gained 0.5%, to 10,041.62.

WTI Crude

Oil jumped more than $1 a barrel on Thursday on expectations that falling prices could lead to production cuts, coupled with a steadying of the yuan currency after a week of turmoil spurred by escalation in U.S.-China trade tensions.
