E-Mini Dow


The S&P 500 and Dow posted closing record highs on the first trading day of the year on Monday, helped by gains in Tesla Inc. and bank shares.

E-Mini S&P 500

Stocks rose on Monday as investors began the new year by betting the economy could overcome the latest surge in Covid cases and lifted two of their favorite stocks to significant milestones.

The S&P 500 also notched a record close, as it gained 0.6% to reach 4,796.56.

Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Corp were among the top gainers in the S&P 500, adding about 6.9% and 6.4%, respectively. Casino stocks were higher too, with Las Vegas Sands and Wynn Resorts were each up more than 3%.

nflation and monetary policy are key themes for 2022, as investors expect the Federal Reserve to hike rates multiple times in the coming year to help cool the rise in prices for consumers.

E-Mini Nasdaq

U.S. stock futures were steady in overnight trading on Monday after the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 notched new record closes on the first trading day of 2022.

The Nasdaq Composite was the relative outperformer, gaining 1.2% as Meta PlatformsAmazon and Google-parent Alphabet all closed in the green.

Tesla and Apple were bright spots of the trading day Monday. Tesla added 13.5% after the firm beat fourth-quarter and full-year delivery expectations. Apple became the first ever $3 trillion market capitalization company after rising 2.5% to a new record.

Tesla helped generate some of the momentum Monday, jumping after the electric vehicle company reported 308,600 deliveries in the fourth quarter, beating expectations. Along with Tesla, big automakers also saw their shares climb. Ford Motor and General Motors rose about 4.8% and 4.3%, respectively.

HSI

Hong Kong stocks slipped on Monday, their first trading day of 2022 after marking the worst performance by any major global market the previous year, as fresh fears about the health of China's property market weighed on investor sentiment.

WTI Crude

Oil slipped below $78 a barrel on Monday as OPEC+ looked set to agree to a further oil output increase and concern persisted about the demand impact of rising coronavirus cases, despite hopes of a further recovery in 2022.
