U.S. stock futures fell on Monday, as investors scaled back bets of an aggressive interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve later this month following a solid June jobs report.

Hopes that the U.S. central bank would cut rates to counter any hit to economic growth from a prolonged U.S.-China trade dispute had helped Wall Street’s main indexes rebound from a slump in May and hit record highs last week.

U.S. markets ended lower on Monday after hopes for a July interest rate cut waned and Apple shares performed badly. S&P 500 fell 0.48% to 2,975.99. The S&P 500 and Dow retreated for a second trading day in a row on Monday after a massive advance in June.

European shares and U.S. stock futures retreated alongside Asian equities as markets extended a downbeat start to the week. The dollar edged up to the highest in three weeks.

Asian shares retreated on Tuesday in quiet trading as investors awaited signs of what might be ahead for U.S. interest rates.

Shares fell on Wall Street on Monday amid growing speculation an unexpectedly strong pickup in U.S. employment growth last month lead the Federal Reserve to hold back on aggressively cutting its benchmark interest rate. The Nasdaq Composite lost 0.78% to 8098.38.

HSI/HSI Warrants

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index on Monday posted its biggest daily drop in nearly four weeks, tracking a global pullback in equities after strong nonfarm payroll data out of the U.S. led investors to trim their bets on aggressive easing by the Fed. 

At the close of trade, the Hang Seng index was down 1.54% at 28,331.69. It was the biggest daily fall for the bourse since June 12.

Gold

Gold prices edged lower on Monday as increasing expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve will not aggressively cut interest rates later this month boosted the dollar, making gold expensive for holders of other currencies.
